The world community has condemned the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to close the human rights organization “International Memorial“.

This was reported by UA.

The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the decision to close the Memorial contradicts international obligations to protect fundamental civil rights.

They called on the Russian authorities to stop persecuting independent human rights defenders and the United States.

For three decades, researchers at the International Memorial have worked tirelessly to restore the names and histories of millions of victims of Soviet repression, promoting historical justice. We stand in solidarity with those who have been repressed for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly” – said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Memorial is one of the oldest human rights organizations in Russia. For more than 30 years, she conducted research on Soviet repression and created the most detailed database of the names of those repressed. In addition, Memorial maintains lists of current political prisoners in Russia.

To remind, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to liquidate the International Memorial. The organization allegedly repeatedly violated the law, as well as engaged in political activities to influence government decisions and the formation of public opinion.
