On April 25, the European Parliament has adopted a resolution that condemns Vladimir Putin’s sham re-election in Marhc and proclaims the elections illegitimate.

The text of the resolution was published by the European Parliament’s press service.

The resolution was supported by 493 votes.

In the resolution, MEPs call Putin’s elections a “farce” and urge EU member states and the international community not to recognise the results of the Russian sham election.

“This farcical performance by the Russian authorities had the single goal of creating the appearance of electoral legitimacy for Vladimir Putin, his policy of relentless domestic repression and, most of all, for the war of aggression against Ukraine,” MEPs claim, according to the statement.

In addition to saying that in Russia the election was “neither free nor fair”, MEPs specifically pointed out that the elections were carried out in the occupied territories of Ukraine which was a violation of international law.

The Parliament mentioned that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was among few world leaders who congratulated Putin and expressed regret he had deviated from the EU’s outlook on the election in Russia.
