On April 28, major power outages occurred across Spain and Portugal during the day.

This was reported by Politico.

Late in the morning on Monday, around noon local time, many areas of the Iberian Peninsula — both in Spain and Portugal — were left without electricity. In Madrid, the metro and suburban trains came to a halt.

Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica reported that it had activated protocols to restore power supply.

“The cause of the problem is being identified, and all resources are being directed toward resolving it,” the statement said.

No official explanations for the possible causes have yet been provided.

Citizens were urged not to call emergency services, which are already overwhelmed with calls.

Portuguese police reported that traffic lights across the country were out of service, and that the metro systems in Lisbon and Porto were closed, with no trains operating.

As a reminder, in June 2024, several countries on the Balkan Peninsula also experienced widespread power outages.

In March, a fire at a substation in London paralyzed operations at Heathrow Airport.
