The White House has approved a bipartisan bill that would significantly expand U.S. sanctions against Russia, according to Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the legislation’s authors, UATV English reports.

Speaking after meetings in Washington, Graham said the proposal had been coordinated with the White House and expressed confidence that Congress would pass it.

The legislation would authorize the U.S. president to impose tariffs and other restrictions on countries that continue purchasing Russian oil and gas, as well as on foreign companies and governments that help Moscow evade existing sanctions.

“We are going to engage with countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas and helping Russia circumvent sanctions, together with President Trump. We will try to persuade them to help us bring this war to an end. I have never been more optimistic than I am today that we have a formula to end this war,” Graham said.

The proposed legislation is intended to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin by targeting both Russia’s energy revenues and third countries that continue supporting its exports despite existing Western sanctions.

The announcement comes as Ukraine continues to call for tougher international measures against Moscow. Earlier, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv expects the European Union to adopt an effective new sanctions package that would maximize economic pressure on Russia.
