Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul to discuss strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, expanding defense cooperation, and maintaining bipartisan support for Kyiv in the U.S. Congress, UATV English reports.
Sybiha thanked McCaul for his continued leadership and longstanding support for Ukraine, noting that he was the first member of the U.S. Congress to visit the frontline in Ukraine’s Donetsk region since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The foreign minister briefed the congressman on the consequences of Russia’s recent large-scale missile and drone attacks, emphasizing Ukraine’s urgent need for additional air defense systems.
The two sides reaffirmed the importance of preserving strong bipartisan and bicameral support for Ukraine in the U.S. Congress. They also discussed expanding bilateral security and defense cooperation, advancing legislative initiatives to increase sanctions pressure on Russia, strengthening cooperation on defense innovation—including drone technologies—and deepening the U.S.-Ukraine economic partnership.
Particular attention was given to implementing the agreements reached during the recent meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, especially in the areas of air defense and unmanned systems.
“I am grateful to Michael McCaul for his unwavering principled support for Ukraine and his personal leadership in the U.S. Congress. We highly value the strong bipartisan and bicameral support for Ukraine. Every additional air defense system saves Ukrainian lives, and every step that raises the cost of Russian aggression brings a comprehensive and lasting peace closer,” Sybiha said.
