European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged the House of Representatives of the US Congress to deliver urgent aid to Ukraine and predicted Russia’s interference in European elections this June.

She made such a statement during an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.

“I now appeal very clearly to the U.S. House of Representatives to also get together and finally allow the aid package for Ukraine, which has been stalled for months, to pass. Ukraine deserves support from all free countries in the world,” von der Leyen said.

She emphasized that the EU always managed to agree on further support for Ukraine, despite all the difficulties and discrepancies, hence, she hopes to see the same unity from Congress to help not only Ukraine, but also NATO as a result.

She also mentioned a threat to democratic elections that comes from Russia.

“Europe is now experiencing a double attack: one from outside and one from within. […] Let’s not deceive ourselves: Putin’s friends want to destroy the European Union from within, through the process of disintegration. […] Putin wants to influence all future decisions in the West this year in his favor: elections to the European Parliament in June, elections to East Germany at the end of the summer and US elections in November,” von der Leyen said.

After Iranian attack on Israel, House Speaker Johnson claimed the House would try to put aid for Israel to a vote again, however, he didn’t mention Ukraine and whether the House planned to combine aid for both countries in one package.
