It is impossible to disconnect Zaporizhzhia NPP from the unified energy system of Ukraine – Plachkov named the reasons

It is impossible to completely shut down the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) while there is nuclear fuel in the reactor, and the ZNPP is in the Ukrainian energy system. The former head of the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine, Grigory Plachkov, spoke about this on the FREEDOM TV channel.

“While there is fuel in the reactor core, it is necessary to remove excess heat, and for this the main circulation pumps must operate. The pumps are powered by Ukrainian electricity. Therefore, disconnecting a nuclear power plant from the unified energy system of Ukraine is technically incorrect. This is an increase in the risks of nuclear and radiation hazards, which can lead to non-design or beyond design events at the nuclear power plant itself,” he explained.

Fire extinguishing systems depend on electricity, which, if turned off, increases the risk of abnormal or emergency situations.

“At the Zaporozhzhia NPP there is both a radioactive waste storage facility and a dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel. Fire extinguishing systems are powered by electricity. Therefore, simply disconnecting a nuclear power plant from electricity and the energy system means increasing the risks of non-design and design-related events at the nuclear power plant itself,” Plachkov emphasized.
