The United States and South Korea have agreed to suspend joint military drills scheduled for August.

According to Deutsche Welle, “Under close cooperation, South Korea, and the United States have decided to suspend all the plans for the annual defensive drills “Freedom Guardian,” which were to take place in August,” said South Korean Defense Ministry Spokesperson Choi Hyun-Soo.

“Consistent with President Trump’s commitment and together with our Republic of Korea ally, the United States military has suspended all planning for this August’s defensive ‘wargame,’ “Freedom Guardian. We are still coordinating additional actions. No decisions on subsequent wargames have been made,” said the chief Pentagon Spokesperson Dana White.

The American president said that he planned to end military exercises with South Korea a week ago during a news conference in Singapore, where a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took place.

“It’s inappropriate to be having war games,” said Trump, calling them “provocative” and adding that this action is something that he considers Koreans would appreciate.

As reported, the reason for such a serious step is the North Korea’s earlier promises of denuclearization, said White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders.
