Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed an order making April 30th a Professional Holiday for Members of the country’s Border Guard Service. The holiday was created in honor of the Guard’s 100 year anniversary, which was founded in the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918. The President also mentioned that since the beginning of Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine, 70 members of Ukraine’s Border Guard Service have died.

“As President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, I decided to change the date of the professional holiday of the border guards. I signed a decree on the establishment of the Border Guard Day on April 30 – in honor of the centenary of our Border Service. This holiday must, at last, become consistent with real historical events in Ukraine. Modern Ukraine is a historical successor to the UPR and the Hetman State,” said Ukrainian President during a speech on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Ukrainian Border Guard Service.
