Ukrainian died in a fire on the MSC Messina in Indian Ocean, – Foreign Ministry

The Ukrainian Embassies in India and Singapore found out that a Ukrainian died as a result of fire on the MSC Messina. His body was taken to Singapore.

 This was announced by the speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oleh Nikolenko, Ukrinform reports.

On June 25, not far from the port of Blair on the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean, a fire broke out in the engine room of the MSC Messina container ship, as a result of which one Ukrainian died. The vessel with 28 crew members on board, including 26 Ukrainian citizens, had the way from Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Singapore.

The fire was extinguished with the help of the crew and with the help of several ships that were in the area of the incident. Other sailors were not injured. Their condition is satisfactory.

MSC Messina is currently being towed to Singapore. 

The body of the Ukrainian sailor has already been delivered to Singapore. The preparation procedure for his repatriation has begun.

The case is controlled by the Ukrainian Embassy in Singapore.
