Traditional Nativity Theatre Shares Mecry and Joy

Three wise men led by a guiding star brought their gifts to baby Jesus. In the Christian tradition, they are essential figures for the nativity celebrations on Christmas eve along with angels and shepherds.

“We play the shepherds to whom the angel appeared and announced the good news. Good news for everyone! That our savior, Jesus Christ, was born!” actor Vitaliy said.

The play itself that presents the nativity scene is called “Vertep”. It is believed that this portable theater was introduced in the 16th century by a student of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Now it is held in Kyiv not only for celebrating traditions but for sharing mercy and joy.

Event organizer Oksamyta Novachuk said, “Christmas is Christ. And as long as Ukraine can forgive, can hug one another, can be kind – everything is going to be good! … When Christ was born, angels said: “Praise be to the Lord and peace to people”. We realize that Ukrainians need this peace as never before. We remind people that peace starts in their hearts.”

About 600 children from poor families as well as those whose parents are on the front line received gifts at this event.
