The Verkhovna Rada allowed border guards to use weapons and military equipment

Today, November 18, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the second reading and in general the bill №5232 on the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

This was reported by UA with reference to the broadcast of the Verkhovna Rada meeting.

271 people’s deputies voted for the decision.

The law authorizes employees of the State Border Guard Service to use physical force, special means and firearms in the manner and cases provided by the Law on the National Police and military statutes of the Armed Forces (such as threatening the life or health of an employee, protecting people from attack, dismissal hostages or illegally imprisoned persons, etc).

Security Service of Ukraine servicemen and employees are now allowed to carry out a visual inspection of persons, belongings and vehicles (surface inspection), as well as a personal inspection of detainees. Border guards may also inspect and, if necessary, seize items that may be material evidence or may harm human life or health.

The draft law establishes the conditions and limits, type and intensity of coercive measures, taking into account the specific situation, the nature of the offense and the individual characteristics of the person who committed or is committing the offense.

The document defines the features of the application of a measure or means of coercion.
