Ukrainian diplomacy is actively working to involve China in the Global Peace Summit, which will be held in Switzerland. It is important for Ukraine to involve countries of the global South, especially India and China. An expert on East Asian issues, Master of Foreign Policy Natalya Plaksienko-Butyrskaya spoke about this on the FREEDOM TV channel.

“The Ukrainian side is very actively working to delay, invite, and involve China in the Global Summit on the Peace Formula. Ukraine is trying to hold this summit with the maximum presence of representatives from different countries. This will provide an opportunity to show the representativeness and desire to get peace on Ukraine’s terms on the part of most countries,” she said.

It is important for Ukraine to have the countries of the global South, namely India and China, present at the summit, the expert emphasized.

“If we are talking about the global South, then it is impossible to imagine it without India and China. Everything is clear with India, because their representative took part in advisory summits, and their representatives are in touch with Ukraine. “With China, not everything is so simple, because after the telephone conversation [of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last year with [Chinese President] Xi Jinping, which also took place under certain pressure from Western countries, there were no other contacts at the highest level,” she explained she.

China’s position regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine is that they do not supply weapons to Ukraine, that is, they do not add fuel to the fire.

“China needs to show that it has its finger on the pulse and is actively working with all parties. And, as the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) assures, China is constantly in contact with all parties. The PRC says that, unlike the West, they do not add fuel to the fire, which means we do not supply weapons to Ukraine. It is this formula on how to stop the war that is being very seriously promoted and constantly voiced by China,” the sinologist explained.

China sees the situation as follows: the initiative in the war is on Russia’s side, the Russian Federation has a strong economy and power, and a split is occurring in the Western world, Plaksienko-Butyrskaya noted.

“From China’s point of view, Russia is now in a stronger position. If we read the Chinese press, then in it Russia holds the initiative on the battlefield. It is strong, it has a strong economy. Vladimir Putin has regained power, and it is unshakable. There is a split in the Western camp. This is a definite chance for China to provide its peacekeeping and mediation services,” she said.
