Tiny Kox, a representative of the Netherlands, who is known for his pro-Russian stance, has been elected as the new President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

It is reported by UA with a link to the PACE Twitter.

“Congratulations to Tiny Kox (Netherlands), who has just been elected as the next President of the Parliamentary Assembly,” the post reads.

In April 2019, Cox prepared the report “The Role and Mission of PACE: the main challenges of the future”, in which he advocated the creation of an alternative mechanism for imposing sanctions against countries that violate the principles of the Council of Europe.

According to the Ukrainian delegates, the original text of the report contained norms allowing the return of the Russian delegation to the Assembly.

On April 10, 2019, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe approved a resolution supporting this Cox report, from the final text of which the mentioned norms were excluded.

Recall that 40 members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe nominated the head of the Permanent Delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to PACE Maria Mezentseva as a candidate for its presidency. Her key opponent in the elections was the pro-Russian deputy from the Netherlands Tiny Kox.

Mezentseva’s candidacy was proposed by 40 colleagues from different countries and almost all PACE parties, except for the one from which the deputy from the Netherlands comes.
