German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has ruled out the possibility of a Russian victory in the war against Ukraine and called for continued support for Kyiv, Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, UATV English informs.
The German chancellor stressed that ending the war as soon as possible would also be in Russia’s own interest.
“Russia has no chance of winning this war. It will not achieve its military objectives, and the sooner we end this war, the better it will be for Europe, the better it will be for Russia, and the better it will be for peace in the world,” Merz said.
He added that Germany and its allies would continue providing military assistance to Ukraine.
Earlier, Merz said Ukraine is now in a stronger position on the battlefield and argued that Russia should begin negotiations on freezing the front line.
The German chancellor has also announced that Germany will advocate at the NATO Summit for new financial commitments from European partners to support Ukraine.
As previously reported, the final declaration of the July 7–8 NATO Summit in Ankara is expected to state that Russia poses a threat to Euro-Atlantic security and include a commitment by NATO member states to provide Ukraine with €70 billion in annual military assistance in 2026 and 2027.
