Today, January 19, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba had a telephone conversation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell regarding the security situation around Ukraine.

This is reported by UA with reference to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The conversation took place in the context of active diplomatic efforts by Ukraine, the US and the EU to prevent further escalation by the Russian Federation and on the eve of the EU Council meeting on January 24.

“Every country in the European Union must understand that no matter how high the cost of containing Russia, the cost of ending a new war will be much higher. The only correct strategy is to show toughness and act as a united front with Ukraine” – Kuleba stressed.

The parties discussed a comprehensive package to contain Russia, in particular, the preparation of tough EU sanctions against the Russian Federation in case of further escalation.

Josep Borrell informed Dmytro Kuleba about the results of the meeting of EU foreign ministers in the Anthem format last week and confirmed that there is a clear understanding in the EU: only a powerful containment package will stop Russia.

According to Borrell, one of the goals of Russia now is precisely the internal destabilization of Ukraine, in particular, in order to have a negative impact on economic and financial processes. The head of European diplomacy assured of the readiness of the EU to continue to support Ukraine in these areas.

To remind, Josep Borrell said that a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine is not the most likely scenario.
