State of Emergency Declared in 11 Italian Regions

Italy’s declared a state of emergency in 11 Italian regions experiencing flooding from heavy rains and advised people to stay away from the rivers.

Tremendous downpours and extreme weather have killed at least 29 people. Nine people from two families in Sicily who were having dinner together when they were trapped in their homes and died from flash flooding. The only survivor was the homeowner, who had left to walk the family dog.

The affected regions are Liguria, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sicily, Lazio, Sardinia, Calabria, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Trentino Alto Adige.

So far, it’s estimated that property damage will amount to some €3 billion ($3.4 billion). More than 14 million trees were torn down in extreme winds.
