DocuDays Film Festival: Ukrainian Lifestories in Times of War

Olena Apchel is from the settlement of Novotroitske in the Donetsk region. She left her home that turned out to be right in the middle of the combat zone when the war in Eastern Ukraine broke out. Every six months Olena returns to take clean up. The last time, Olena brought film director Piotr Armyanovsky along.

After this trip and some filming, Piotr Armyanovsky presented his new short documentary, called “Mustard in the gardens”.

The film is only 15 minutes long. In the film Olena shares, the memories of her childhood and reflects on the importance of a home and how the war took it away.

Olena’s Cat’s fate is the subject the viewers wonder the most about. The heroine explained that the cat is a symbol of life along the frontline.

Another movie showing Ukrainians fight for their nation’s identity is called “holiday”. It shows the events that took place in Mykolaiv, on the 9th of May 2017. On this day, when Ukraine celebrated liberation from Nazism in World War Two, two groups of people met on the city’s main square where the celebration occurred – one of them was carrying Ukrainian flags, the other one bared Soviet symbology.

The director confessed that she witnessed the events by chance. But still decided to create a movie.

Another movie called “Meriem” was shot in the Syrian city of Cobani. It tells the story of Islamic women-warriors who put up a strong fight against the terrorists of the “Islamic State”. Even in a Different country – a similar problem arises – gender equality in times of war. The movie demonstrates women’s dedication in a patriarchal society.

Overall, twelve movies about life in different parts of the world have been presented throughout the 2018 “Docu Days” festival.
