Christmas Tree Recycling In Kyiv

 

After the Christmas holidays, Kyiv city landscapers have extra work to do. They need to recycle these huge piles of discarded Christmas trees.

They are sawed into pieces and sent into the crusher.

“The chips are then used fertilize and also to keep warm living trees,” municipal worker Serhiy said.

In wintertime, a layer of chips provides excellent heat insulation. In spring it will be used as fertilizer.

“It’s done so that they retain moisture. It keeps weeds from growing. And the chips contain a lot of substances useful for plants. Mineral fertilizers,” municipal worker Svitlana said.

Public utilities have so far received around 7,000 Christmas trees. However, these are mostly unsold trees from the markets. Most Kyiv residents don’t dispose of their Christmas trees until mid-January.
