Actors and producers of the film, “Lito,” deployed a poster with the name “Kirill Serbrennikov” on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival.

Sebrennikov is the director of the “Lito,” which made its premiere at the festival.

Sebrennikov is currently under house arrest in Russia on charges of financial fraud, which he calls politically motivated.

The film crew held banners with his name while attending the premiere and they received a standing ovation.

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking for the filmmaker to attend the screening. However, Putin refused, saying that he “would have loved to help, but the courts are independent.” “Lito” focuses on the life of legendary Russian rockstar Victor Tsoi and his struggle with censorship in 1980’s Soviet Union , a topic perceived as a metaphor for today’s Russia.
