Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU: Key Achievements

The government of Ukraine presented a report on the implementation of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU and summed up the results of the effects of Ukraine’s integration into the EU over 6 years.

Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanyshyna noted that over the past 2 years, the dynamics of the implementation of the Association Agreement regarding the approximation of legislation has increased.

“Our relations with the EU are not static, but dynamic, and the dependence on progress in previous years – the more successfully and powerfully we work today, the more opportunities we have tomorrow”, – she said.

According to the official, most of the work is devoted to ensuring that Ukraine goes beyond the format of doing “homework”.

During the meeting the key achievements over six years of Ukraine’s integration into the EU were marked. Among them is the reform of decentralization. One of its components was the creation of almost 900 Administrative Services Center.

Another achievement is the shift of Ukrainian exports to the EU Single Market.

“Since the start of the operation of the free trade zone, the share of trade in goods and services with the EU has been more than 40% of the total volume of Ukraine’s trade. After visa-free travel was introduced, which opened the free movement of people, the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the EU also opened access to the European market, with most of our exports to the EU is now goods and services that are produced by Ukrainian small and medium enterprises. So, if in 2013 Ukrainian exports to the EU amounted to 13.4 billion euros, in 2019 it reached 19.1 billion euros”, – the message says.

Also, customs formalities for enterprises with a high level of trust are being simplified, and bases have been created for mutual recognition of the status of authorized economic operators.

In addition, progress has been made in the digital sphere.

It is also noted that Ukraine is fully synchronized with Europe in the gas market mode today by switching to daily balancing.

In total, since the beginning of the temporary application of certain provisions of the Association Agreement, Ukraine has completed 56% of the activities provided by the government action plan until 2024.
