The President of the UN General Assembly Abdullah Shahid closed the high-level week, which was attended by about a hundred heads of state.

This is reported by UA with the reference to Ukrinform.

“The UN has taken a significant and bold step to end the pandemic. We must build on this success and move forward. However, the true measure of our success remains our willingness and ability to engage in dialogue and believe in a multilateral system” – Shahid said.

The head of the UN General Assembly said that 194 speakers had spoken at the session in a week, including 100 heads of state, 52 heads of government, three vice presidents and 34 ministers. This year, only 18 of the 194 speakers were women, so, according to Shahid, “more needs to be done to balance the scales”.

A clear set of issues was discussed during the week: COVID-19, climate change, peace, security and the risks of instability.

“The fact that each of these issues dominated speaks what the world wants” – Shahid said.

He added that the UN must now address these issues “in such a way as to turn every challenge into an opportunity to strengthen the multilateral approach and achieve results on the ground”.

To remind, Acting Director of the Directorate General for International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Valentyn Skuratovskyi said that the speech of the President of Ukraine at the UN General Assembly will set the tone in the work of the organization for the year ahead.
