Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco will be Reburied

Spain’s dictator Francisco Franco will be reburied on Tuesday after the government of Pedro Sanchez received approval to remove Franco’s body.

The plan is to turn the site of the Valley of the Fallen where he was initially buried into a place to remember the civil war rather than glorify the dictator.

The move has sparked anger from supporters of Franco. His family says they will bury him in Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral.

But this has struck a nerve with the tens of thousands of families of his opponents who were killed or tortured during his nearly 40 years in power. They say his body should not be transferred to the Cathedral.

Nearly 500,000 combatants and civilians died in the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939.
