Building Ukraine’s Naval Defense

Today on a visit to the international maritime exercise, Sea Breeze 2018, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that a top priority for Ukraine is the speedy restoration of its naval defense.

He said that Sea Breeze is showing that Ukraine and its allies are getting better at working together by sea.

During his working trip to the Odesa region, Poroshenko met with General Curtis Scaparotti, the Commander of the United States European Command.

He also visited the US command ship Mount Whitney.

Cooperation between Ukraine and NATO has intensified over the past four years, Poroshenko said.

Ukraine is strengthening its defense capacity and reforming its security sector with the strategic goal of joining NATO.

Sea Breeze started July 9 and continues to July 21. The participants are working out tasks agreed upon by the multinational headquarters for planning and conducting maritime operations in accordance with NATO standards in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, and in the Northwestern part of the Black Sea.

The exercise involves the flagship of the United States Sixth Fleet USS Mount Whitney, the US destroyer USS Porter, Turkish frigate TCG Yavuz, Bulgarian corvette BGS Bodri, Turkish submarine TCG Yildiray, more than two dozen warships and cutters of the Ukrainian Naval Forces and State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, and 25 planes and helicopters.
