On March 1st, 1943, Nazi SS forces blocked the way out of the Ukrainian village of Koriukivka, in the Chernihiv region. The German forces then proceeded the execution of every single resident of the village. Many were shot down, but some also were burnt alive.

Around 7 thousand people, from newborn children to the elderly, were killed. The Nazi operation was retribution for the Soviet partisan attack, led by Oleksiy Fedorov, on the German garrison located in the village. The partisans wanted to free their fellow citizens, who were detained by Nazi forces.

Koriukivka is not the ony village that has suffered from the same fate accross Europe; other places such as Oradour-sur-glane in France, Khatyn in Belarussia, or Lidice in Czech Republic have suffered from massacres perpetrated by the Nazi occupying forces. However, according to historians, the Koriukivka tragedy was the largest massacre of civilians conducted by Nazis during World War II.
