Maia Sandu stated that Europe and Ukraine’s international partners must increase economic pressure on Russia in order to force the Kremlin toward genuine negotiations on ending the war.
According to UATV English, Sandu made the remarks during the GLOBSEC forum in Prague, as cited by Newsmaker.
Sandu argued that the Russian leadership currently shows no real interest in meaningful peace negotiations and stressed that continued support for Ukraine remains essential.
“We need to increase economic pressure on Russia. I do not think the Kremlin is currently interested in ending the war, and I do not think the Kremlin and Putin are interested in serious peace negotiations,” Sandu said.
“To make this happen, Europe and the rest of the world must intensify pressure on Russia,” she added.
The Moldovan president emphasized that all necessary support for Ukraine should continue, describing it as the only realistic path toward restoring peace in the region.
Sandu also warned that European countries must prepare for continued Russian hybrid warfare activities. Among the threats she listed were cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, illegal financing of political parties and election campaigns, as well as broader destabilization efforts.
“Russia uses a wide range of tools, and we must take this seriously and prepare for it,” she stated.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying access to Russian citizenship for residents of the unrecognized region of Transnistria.
Sandu warned that the measure could potentially be used to facilitate the mobilization of residents from the Moldovan region for participation in the war against Ukraine.
