Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Belgium is preparing a new military assistance package for Ukraine and will contribute to the PURL initiative, following talks with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, UATV English reports.
According to Zelenskyy, the leaders held detailed discussions on strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, with a particular focus on air defense and military support.
“Belgium is preparing a new substantial aid package and a contribution to the PURL program,” Zelenskyy said.
The two sides also discussed the schedule for the delivery of F-16 fighter jets. Zelenskyy announced that the first aircraft are expected to arrive in Ukraine later this year.
“The first deliveries will take place already this year. This kind of support in protecting our skies is what we need most right now,” the Ukrainian president said.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy briefed the Belgian prime minister on the outcomes of the G7 Summit and on Ukraine’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining and increasing pressure on Russia to compel Moscow to change its course.
In addition, Zelenskyy and De Wever discussed Ukraine’s progress toward European Union membership. The Ukrainian president thanked Belgium for its continued support, both at the governmental level and among the Belgian people.
“It is truly important that pressure on the aggressor continues to grow,” Zelenskyy said.
