The UK government has dismissed Russian claims that Britain and France intend to provide Ukraine with nuclear weapons, UATV English reports.

“This is an obvious attempt by Vladimir Putin to distract from his horrific actions in Ukraine. There is no truth in this whatsoever. You heard the Prime Minister this morning paying tribute to the incredible resilience of the Ukrainian people… We will continue our efforts to secure a just and lasting peace,” a UK government spokesperson said.

The response came after Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service accused the United Kingdom and France of allegedly planning to supply Ukraine with nuclear bombs or a so-called “dirty bomb,” without presenting any evidence.

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev later claimed that if such steps were taken, Russia could use nuclear weapons against the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and France “if necessary.”

The statements come amid broader discussions in Europe about strengthening nuclear deterrence. Several European countries have publicly expressed interest in joining talks on creating a shared European nuclear deterrence framework.

In recent speeches at the Munich Security Conference, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron raised the issue of European nuclear deterrence. Macron in particular spoke about the need to “rethink nuclear deterrence,” including in the context of conventional long-range weapons.
