U.S. President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin are both “open to doing something” regarding efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump made the remarks during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Évian ahead of the G7 Summit, UATV English reports.

The U.S. president said he had “good” conversations with both Zelenskyy and Putin on Sunday.

“Yesterday, I had a very good conversation with President Zelenskyy and President Putin. And I see that maybe we can get something done in that direction. I really think so. I think they are both open to it,” Trump said.

The White House chief said he would focus on ending the war in Ukraine and see whether progress could be achieved.

“We will focus on that and see if we can do it. Twenty-five thousand people are dying every month, mostly soldiers, and that should not be happening. I had two very good conversations yesterday. We will be talking about it,” Trump said.

The day before, President Zelenskyy said that his conversation with Trump focused on efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

On the same day, Putin also held a phone call with Trump. During the conversation, the two sides reportedly agreed on a forthcoming visit by Trump’s special representatives to Moscow.

On Monday, Zelenskyy revealed that he had proposed meeting Putin during the G7 Summit in France this week to discuss ending the war, but said that Russia “was not ready to talk.”
