U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he had a “good” meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the G7 Leaders’ Summit and said that “Russia must make a deal.”
The American leader made the remarks while answering journalists’ questions during a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, UATV English reports.
“Russia must make a deal,” Trump said, confirming that he had a “very good meeting” with Zelenskyy.
He also added that he was scheduled to meet the Ukrainian president again later in the day.
“Look, Russia must make a deal. Russia has lost a tremendous number of people, just as Ukraine has,” Trump stressed. He noted that “last month they lost 35,000 soldiers between them. Every month. On average, it has been about 25,000 people, mostly soldiers, young, beautiful people.”
Calling the Russia–Ukraine war “crazy,” Trump reiterated that he had a productive meeting with Zelenskyy.
“But we had a meeting, and we’ll see… I spoke with President Putin on Sunday,” Trump said, without disclosing details of the conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The U.S. president added that “there is a lot of animosity between the two leaders” and said he would meet Zelenskyy again later that day.
For his part, Zelenskyy published a photo from the meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Évian.
“It is always important to coordinate positions,” Zelenskyy wrote alongside the photo, which also shows U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov.
As previously reported, the G7 summit began on June 15 in Évian-les-Bains, France. The central Ukraine-related event of the summit is a working session involving President Zelenskyy focused on peace and security for Ukraine and Europe.
Zelenskyy described the meetings taking place in Évian as substantive and said that the key objectives are to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and push Russia toward diplomacy.
