UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer believes that Donald Trump has made it absolutely clear to Vladimir Putin what he expects from him—and is reinforcing that message by providing both military and economic support to Ukraine.

Speaking at a joint press conference in London with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Starmer said:

“The President has made it absolutely clear that he wants Putin to move toward peace—and he is backing that up with capabilities, both military and economic. That’s very important.”

He was responding to a journalist’s question about Trump’s reported 50-day ultimatum to Putin.

Starmer added that he and Chancellor Merz had a lengthy discussion earlier in the day and have been working closely with allies to achieve this result.

“We’ve been working with our allies—and particularly with the U.S.—for a long time, but especially intensively in recent weeks to reach the position we’re in now,” Starmer noted.

He recalled last week’s “Coalition of the Willing” meeting, where U.S. representatives also discussed sanctions policy.

“We are now leading efforts to deliver the best available equipment to Ukraine as quickly as possible. We will continue to push forward with this mission alongside the U.S. and other allies—because ultimately, our security begins in Ukraine,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom and Germany signed a landmark Treaty of Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation, the first of its kind between Berlin and London.

As previously reported, Chancellor Merz confirmed that Ukraine will receive Patriot air defense systems in the coming weeks.
