Russia has once again intensified its nuclear rhetoric, demonstrating the Kremlin’s continued unwillingness to pursue a diplomatic settlement to the war against Ukraine. According to UATV English, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) made the statement on Telegram.

“An article published in the government newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta openly proposes the use of tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield to break through the defenses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In addition, the author calls on Russian intelligence services to ‘eliminate’ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. At the same time, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin stated that Moscow and Minsk are prepared to use their nuclear arsenal to ‘protect the Union State’ because of the alleged buildup of NATO forces,” the CCD said.

According to the center, the return to aggressive nuclear rhetoric reflects Russia’s lack of strategic success on the battlefield.

Unable to achieve its objectives through military means and having ignored diplomatic initiatives, the Kremlin is once again resorting to what the CCD described as its “last argument” — nuclear blackmail and intimidation.

“Such statements in official Russian government media once again prove that Russia does not want peace, and its aggressive rhetoric is merely an attempt to substitute real military achievements with another round of nuclear blackmail,” the CCD stressed.

The statement comes after Ukraine’s General Staff reported that at 02:10 a.m. on June 7, a Russian attack drone directly struck the container reception building of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility operated by Energoatom near the village of Buriakivka, approximately 15 kilometers from the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant site.

The facility is designed for the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel from VVER-type reactors used at Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

The strike partially damaged the building and caused a fire covering approximately 40 square meters. Emergency responders extinguished the blaze within an hour. According to available information, no casualties were reported.
