Lindsey Graham, one of the most influential figures in the US Republican Party, died on the evening of July 11 after a brief and sudden illness at age 71. His Senate office confirmed the news, according to UATV English.

“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” his office said in a statement.

Graham was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 and to the Senate in 2002. He was seeking reelection this year.

Throughout his career, the senator was a strong supporter of Ukraine, backing joint drone production initiatives and the provision of air defense systems to the country. He pushed for tough sanctions targeting Russian oil and gas exports, arguing that strengthening Ukraine’s defenses directly bolstered US security.

As previously reported, on July 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Senator Graham in Kyiv, where the two discussed increasing sanctions pressure on Russia, the situation on the battlefield, and Ukraine’s air defense needs.
