The Ukrainian born Olympic champion explained that her “path to Olympic gold was not easy. Those who know me understand how hard I fought for this. The harder the better, because I love figure skating. It is dream that became reality.”
Olena Savchenko further made clear why she chose Germany, and not Ukraine: “As for my career in Ukraine, sometimes the Motherland cannot give you all the necessary opportunities to achieve yours goals. In that case, Germany gave me the chance to fulfil my dream, but I’m still proud to be born in Ukraine, and in my heart, I will always be Ukrainian”.
Aljona Savchenko, a native of Obukhiv, officially became German in 2005, and won five world gold medals, multiple gold medals across Europe, and two “bronze medals” at the Olympics of Vancouver and Sochi.
