NATO and Ukrainian Navy Warships Hold PASSEX Exercise

Warships of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two carried out joint passing exercises (PASSEX) with the Ukrainian Naval Forces, the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports.

The training was carried out “to increase interoperability, work out cooperation within multinational tactical units, mine countermeasures in line with NATO standards.”

The teams also practiced joint anti-missile actions.

Three tactical teams: multipurpose ships, anti-missile ships and artillery boats participated in the training.

The frigates of the Netherlands: De Ruyter, Romania: Regele Ferdinand, Turkey: Faith, and Ukraine: Hetman Sahaidachnyi, took part. They worked out maneuvres in cooperation with boat tactical groups, which consisted of small armored artillery boats Akkerman, Berdiansk, Vyshgorod, Kremenchuk and Lubny.

“During the exercise, Romanian Navy minesweeper ROS Lt. Lupu Dinescu, Turkish Navy MCMW TCG Anamur, and Ukrainian Navy raiding minesweeper Henichesk carried out the search and detection of anchored and underwater mines. The mines were inspected by divers. The exercise involved a helicopter from the Dutch frigate, which was carrying out elements of tactical maneuvering,” wrote the Ministry of Defense.

The teams also worked on hitting small-scale high-speed targets, and simulating artillery strikes on militant multi-purpose ships.

UATV reported on July 22, that the maritime exercise Sea Breeze 2018 ended. The participants worked out tasks agreed upon by the multinational headquarters for planning and conducting maritime operations in accordance with NATO standards in Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, and in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

The exercise involved the flagship of the United States Sixth Fleet USS Mount Whitney, the U.S. destroyer USS Porter, Turkish frigate TCG Yavuz, Bulgarian corvette BGS Bodri, Turkish submarine TCG Yildiray, more than two dozen warships of the Ukrainian Naval Forces and the State Border Guard Service, and 25 planes and helicopters.
