NATO Meetings Kick Off in London

This is a two-day event. The leaders will discuss strategic economic and security issues like threats from cyberspace, terrorism, Syria’s 8-year Civil War, China’s growing military might, Russia’s growing assertiveness, space warfare and more.

NATO’s first headquarters was established in 1949 in London. To mark the 70th anniversary of the alliance, top-level talks involving the heads of NATO member states are being held here. All the leaders are expected to attend a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen.

US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron will attend the meeting. Ukraine will be represented by Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko.

During the press conference ahead of the leaders meeting, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Russain aggression in Ukraine and the Minsk Agreements will be among issues raised during the meeting.

In the wake of his speech in London, the Ukrainian Minister said that he expects Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine and end its aggression as the main outcome of the meeting.

The NATO Engages Conference, which is held a day before the leaders meeting, will feature speakers including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Polish President Andrei Duda and others.

Concerns over potential Russian attacks against NATO member countries in Europe increased after Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014. It pushed the Alliance to increase military capabilities throughout European NATO member countries.
