Russians Tried to Hack First Round of Ukrainian Election

Russians attempted to hack the Ukrainian presidential elections.

Hacking attempts happened in the evening during vote counting, Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov told the Kyiv Security Forum.

“There weren’t mass attacks. Hackers have explored the capabilities of our system. But our system is reliable. Here we can thank our colleagues from the State Social Service, the SBU, and the cyberpolice,” Avakov said.

If the election process was opaque or the president was elected illegitimately, it is very likely that protests would be held, Avakov said.

“Then there would be transitional chaos that would hurt Ukraine. Therefore, it is necessary to hold elections so that Russia can’t make any provocation,” he said.

The first round of the Ukrainian elections was held on March 31. As no candidate received an absolute majority of the vote, a second round will be held on April 21 between the top two candidates – incumbent Petro Poroshenko and entertainer Volodymyr Zelensky.
