German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is planning to visit Ukraine in the near future, Tagesschau reports.

Currently, coordination for the trip is underway. During his visit to Paris, Merz stated that he wants to “do everything possible within the European Union to secure a lasting ceasefire after the coming weekend, so that a peace agreement with Russia can then be concluded.”

The chancellor emphasized that the key question now is whether Russia is ready to agree to a 30-day ceasefire.

Merz also linked the issue of German security guarantees for Ukraine to the need for a prior agreement on a long-term ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to Merz, it is crucial that the United States continues to participate in this process, “as well as in providing future security guarantees for Ukraine,” and “that the Americans remain engaged.”

He expressed hope that the U.S. “will continue to fulfill its commitments” within NATO and towards Ukraine.

Friedrich Merz made his first trip in office to Paris, and is set to travel next to Warsaw.

On Friday, May 9, Merz is expected in Brussels, where he will meet with the President of the European Council and the head of the European Commission.
