German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany will push for new financial commitments to Ukraine from its European NATO allies at next week’s NATO summit in Ankara, UATV English reports.

Speaking in Berlin, Merz said the German government believes European allies should take on additional financial obligations to support Kyiv.

“The German government proposes that we, as European NATO allies, make new financial commitments to Kyiv,” Merz said.

He expressed hope that the Kremlin would draw the appropriate conclusions and become ready to begin ceasefire negotiations.

“We will not retreat from our support for Ukraine,” the chancellor stressed.

According to Merz, it is now up to Russian leader Vladimir Putin to decide whether negotiations will take place and whether the war will come to an end.

NATO allies are expected to announce new multibillion-dollar defense contracts and increased weapons production, including for Ukraine, during the summit in Ankara.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has opposed plans for additional financial assistance to Ukraine that are currently under discussion.
