U.S. President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is “doing pretty well” in resisting Russian aggression and, at the very least, is holding his ground.

Trump made the remarks during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, UATV English reports.

Journalists asked Trump a direct question, referring to his well-known emphasis on winning: “You like winners. Do you think President Zelenskyy is winning right now?”

“He’s doing pretty well. However you look at it, he’s doing pretty well. At least he’s holding his own. Well, he’s doing pretty well. Any way you look at it, he’s holding his own pretty well. At least he’s not giving up ground. I have to say, he’s courageous, he has great equipment, but most importantly, he has great people. He has real fighters,” Trump said.

At the same time, Trump once again shifted the focus to the need for a ceasefire as soon as possible, emphasizing the heavy price both Ukraine and Russia are paying on the battlefield. According to him, intense fighting is claiming the lives of thousands of soldiers every month.

“A lot of people are dying on both sides. The war remains incredibly bloody, and both sides are suffering losses. But I think he’s doing pretty well,” the U.S. president concluded.

Earlier, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Jeremy Lewin made an even stronger statement, saying that “Ukraine is winning the war at this point,” arguing that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have seized the initiative while Russian occupation forces have been forced onto the defensive.
