German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukraine’s President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskyi held a telephone conversation during which Merkel promised to continue to actively support Ukraine on its path of reform, Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported.
“The German government’s deputy spokesperson Ulrike Demmer said that Merkel had congratulated Zelenskyi and indicated that ‘the result of democratic elections gives him a strong mandate,'” the report reads.
Zelenskyi thanked the German government for its support of Ukraine and expressed his interest in progress within the Normandy format.
“The Chancellor stressed that the German government will continue to actively support Ukraine on the path of reform and in its right to sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Deutsche Welle quoted Demmer as saying.
Merkel invited Zelenskyi to Berlin, and the sides agreed to stay in close contact, Merkel said.
