Long-range artillery and weapons systems: how the allies will help Ukraine

Ukraine should receive long-range artillery and weapons systems, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is sure. Also, according to her, the European Union has launched a plan to produce additional ammunition for Ukraine. In particular, the EU sent half a billion euros to European arms companies to modernize equipment, open production lines and train personnel, FREEDOM reports.

“For the first time in our history, a country is under attack because of its desire to be part of the European family. The urgent need, as you know, is for military assistance to support the efforts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. And that’s why we just proposed the Munitions Support Act. We want to push our defense industry to increase the production of much-needed artillery shells,” said Ursula von der Leyen.

The UK was the first country to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles. According to British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, Storm Shadow gives Ukraine more options to defend against Russian aggression.

“We put them in because Russia is constantly using its long-range weapons to strike civilians and civilian critical infrastructure, contrary to all international law and the Geneva Conventions. And despite the fact that I asked them back in December not to do this, they continue to indiscriminately kill and attack Ukraine, people in Ukraine. According to the Charter of the United Nations, Ukraine has an indisputable right to self-defence. And in this self-defense, she has every right to ask for support from her friends and allies, ”Wallace said.

An analogue of the British Storm Shadow is the German Taurus with a range of up to 500 km. A few days ago, Bundestag deputy from the Christian Democratic Union party Roderich Kizewetter called on the German parliament to support the initiative to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

“Ukraine’s partners must go to any lengths and provide Ukraine with everything that it can use in the fight against the relevant weapons and that is permitted by international law,” Kiesewetter said in an interview with the German edition of RND.

Washington, as part of a new aid package, intends to provide Kyiv with unguided Zuni rockets, as well as Avenger air defense systems and Stinger anti-aircraft missile systems. The new aid also includes missiles for HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, additional tank ammunition and anti-tank weapons.

“The US has committed to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to protect the country, and Ukraine has pledged not to use systems inside Russia, so there will most likely be no change in assistance,” a US Department of Defense spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity, in a comment. Voice of America.”

According to US President Joe Biden, the issue of providing Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles is under discussion. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has provided Kyiv with about $37 billion in security assistance.
