Kallas says the EU must stop “outsourcing its survival” to the United States

Europe is no longer a priority in U.S. foreign and security policy, therefore the European Union must step up in the field of its own defense, UATV English reports.

This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas during a conference of the European Defence Agency.

According to her, the United States no longer views Europe as a priority, so the EU must build its own security.

“Let me be very clear. We want strong transatlantic ties. The United States will remain a partner and ally of Europe. But Europe must adapt to new realities: Europe is no longer the main center of gravity for Washington,” Kallas stated.

She spoke of a “fundamental reorientation” across the Atlantic that has “shaken transatlantic relations to their core.”

“The shift has been happening for some time. It is structural, not temporary. This means that Europe must step up. No major power in history has ever outsourced its survival and survived,” the EU’s top diplomat emphasized.

As reported earlier, last week the European Parliament officially confirmed the suspension of work on approving an EU–U.S. trade agreement. The agreement concerned fixing tariffs on European imports to the United States at the level of 15%.

The suspension occurred in response to U.S. President Donald Trump announcing the introduction of tariffs against a number of countries that disagreed with his claims over Greenland. He later withdrew his threats, stating that he had moved closer to an agreement regarding the Arctic island.

Accordingly, work on the EU–U.S. trade agreement may resume.
