A cruise boat capsized in the middle of Viktoria Lake in Uganda on Saturday, killing at least 29 passengers.

The boat was carrying about 100 passengers, of which 27 survived with dozens still missing. It occurred around the banks of Mutima, 20 kilometers south of Kampala.

Rescue operations are still underway, the Independent wrote.

Prince Daudi Kintu Wasajja , musician Irene Nambiru and businessman Freeman Kiyimba were said to be among the survivors rescued.

Police officer  Zula Gannyana said the catastrophe was caused by overcrowding and bad weather combined. At the time of the accident, the weather was stormy. He added that the barge had no valid operating license because, due to its poor technical condition, it had previously been banned from shipping.

As recently as September an overloaded ferry overturned in Lake Victoria, off the Tanzania coast, killing over 200 people in Africa’s largest lake.
