The European Union has renewed its call on Russia to acknowledge responsibility for the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 and fully cooperate with efforts to ensure justice, marking the 12th anniversary of the tragedy, UATV English reports.

In a statement on behalf of the EU, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas paid tribute to the 298 people from 17 countries, including 80 children, who were killed when the aircraft was shot down on July 17, 2014.

The EU reiterated its support for efforts to establish truth, justice and accountability in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2166.

Kallas highlighted the 2025 rulings by the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization, which found Russia responsible for the downing of MH17. The ECHR also held Russia responsible for the suffering caused to the victims’ relatives.

“The European Union reiterates its call on the Russian Federation to accept its responsibility for this tragedy and to fully cooperate with efforts to deliver justice,” Kallas said.

The EU noted that Australia and the Netherlands had called on Russia to begin negotiations on full reparations following the ICAO Council’s decision, but Moscow did not respond to the request.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement on the anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring accountability for Russia and those responsible. The ministry said the MH17 tragedy was one of the earliest demonstrations that Russian aggression “knows no boundaries” and showed Moscow’s disregard for human life and international law.
