US President Donald Trump is prepared to throw his support behind a Russia sanctions package that the late Senator Lindsey Graham had spearheaded, according to a CNN report citing White House sources, UATV English informs.

The report indicates that Trump will back passage of the bipartisan sanctions measure that Graham had championed.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the White House had been coordinating closely with Graham on the legislation in recent weeks. He noted that getting it passed would require support from both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, adding that he remains hopeful it can be accomplished.

According to Thune, the sanctions package was the accomplishment Graham cared about most in his final days, calling it something that would represent an extraordinary legacy for the senator.

CNN reported that, if signed into law, the sanctions package would give Trump authority to impose steep tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, uranium, and natural gas.

As previously reported, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died last week at age 71.
