Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States and President Donald Trump have adjusted their approach to Russia’s war against Ukraine, adopting what G7 leaders view as a more realistic position.

Speaking to reporters on the second day of the G7 Summit, Carney said he had held seven or eight conversations with Trump over the previous 36 hours, discussing a range of issues including Iran, Lebanon, and Ukraine, UATV English reports.

“In discussions on Ukraine, we are seeing a shift in the U.S. position that, in our view, is more realistic given the situation on the battlefield, the possible outcome of the war, and Russia’s defeat,” Carney said.

The Canadian prime minister noted that significant risks remain but emphasized what he described as a change in tone from Washington.

“There are still many risks, but I would underline the change in tone, the change in possibilities in Lebanon and in Ukraine. These are game-changing factors,” Carney said.

His remarks come amid growing signs of closer alignment between the United States and European allies on support for Kyiv.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed optimism that European leaders and President Donald Trump had reached a common position on Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, G7 leaders said they are prepared to consider granting licenses for the production of interceptor missiles directly in Ukraine, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s air defense capabilities and defense industry.
