Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. He described the opening of the first accession negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova as a strong and clear signal to Russia, which seeks to divide Europe, UATV English reports.
The leaders discussed the timetable for opening the remaining five negotiation clusters and the next steps on Ukraine’s path toward EU integration. They also addressed the implementation of the EU’s financial support package and preparations for the disbursement of the first tranche.
“Ukraine expects to receive these funds as early as this month and direct them toward strengthening its defense against Russian aggression. Particular attention was also given to tightening sanctions against Russia. The leaders discussed the European Union’s 21st sanctions package, targeting the energy sector, trade, financial services, and cryptocurrency,” Zelenskyy said.
In addition, the Ukrainian president and EU leaders discussed diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace. The parties agreed that Europe must be represented at the negotiating table.
Zelenskyy stressed that as long as Russia intends to continue the war, Ukraine’s air defense capabilities must be strengthened and work on security guarantees must continue.
As previously reported, on June 15 the European Union opened the first accession negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova, with the decision supported by all EU member states.
