Officials from the Pentagon have confirmed the allocation of $400 million to Ukraine, funds that had already been approved by the United States Congress, after a leading Republican senator overseeing defense spending criticized the delay, UATV English informs.
According to Bloomberg, Senator Mitch McConnell raised the issue in an article published this week.
“The Ukraine aid we approved months ago is now gathering dust at the Pentagon. When members of the Senate Appropriations Committee sought explanations from the Department’s policy office, led by Deputy Secretary Elbridge Colby, they were given evasive answers,” he wrote in an article for The Washington Post.
The senator also recalled that last year Elbridge Colby was behind the decision to suspend weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
However, speaking before a committee of the United States House of Representatives on Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the funds had been released.
“These funds were allocated to strengthen the capabilities of European countries, and they were transferred yesterday,” he said, responding to a question about the allocation, without providing further details.
The package concerns $400 million for the needs of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which provides for the procurement of equipment by the Pentagon from American defense companies. The funding was included in the National Defense Authorization Act approved by the United States Congress in December 2025.
