U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and United States President Donald Trump found “common language immediately” in a phone conversation Friday (July 26).

“Yesterday, President Zelensky had quite a long [telephone] conversation with President Trump, they got acquainted. I spoke with both of them before and after this conversation. The conversation was very successful. They found a common language immediately. President Trump invited Zelensky to visit the White House in the timeline suitable for both parties in the near future,” the American diplomat told Radio Liberty after meeting with Zelensky Friday in Kyiv.

Sondland, who had been joined by U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker in the meeting with Zelensky, told Radio Liberty that among other things they discussed the war, energy security, Naftogaz, and the rule of law.

According to Sondland, a team including Volker, U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, ambassador William Taylor, and other U.S. State Department representatives are working at Trump’s initiative on various aspects of the United States’ relations with Ukraine.

Yesterday, Zelensky’s office stated that, in Zelensky and Trump’s phone conversation, the two agreed to “substantively discuss the practical issues of U.S.-Ukraine cooperation” during the Ukrainian president’s planned visit to Washington.
